It also gives me something to do during the 3 hour journey home at weekends.

The name Armchair Backpacker, means to be a traveller in spirit while being tied to our daily routines. It is the difference between those who take a package beach holiday each summer and those who really love adventures and to explore the world, I come from a whole family of the latter so hopefully they will help me have plenty to write about.

This picture was taken on Hollywood Boulevard by my cousin Steff (an amazing photographer) on our 2007 America trip, which we went on with my sister, Faye. More about that in the blog someday.

I hope you enjoy the blog.

I look forward to hearing about your own Armchair Backpacking.

Ang x

What? Why? and Who?

Ive been asked a few questions about the blog so here are some answers. Hope it clears things up.

What is an Armchair Backpacker?

I made up the name a couple of years ago, back when I was first thinking about a blog. It just means not only to love to travel but to love the whole idea of travel. To embrace the hobby of travel even when you cant go anywhere. Under the term 'armchair backpacking' comes all the things I do to indulge my hobby, like reading travel websites, reading travel literature, planning future trips and exploring the places I can get to.

I dont own an armchair but if I did it would be this one.

Why Blog?

I've set up this blog for a number of reasons:
1. Because one of my many new years resolutions is to become a better traveller. I plan to do this by being more educated about the world in general. About language, georgraphy, food, culture and politics. So I thought I'd keep track of what I learnt in a blog. Travel is just a hobby that I spend my pennies on and the blog is just part of that hobby. Im not a professional writer, its mostly just my opinions and notes. I dont make any money from the blog or advertise it professionally.
2. Because Ive been toying with the idea of blogging for a while. When technology is concerned I like to have educated opinions. Cause I think once you dont embrace something youll be left behind. In the spirit of this I've joined MySpace (and promptly left), Ive joined Facebook (I'm still there, Ive tried all it has to offer and decided its role in my life), I've joined Twitter (and I'm still getting my head round it) and now im trying blogging.
3. Because after living my whole life near my family (23 years with them and 1 year down the road) Ive now moved 200 miles. My love of technology has always been at odds with my dislike of the culture its created (mobiles have made us lazy etc...) but for the first time I'm interested in new ways of keeping in touch. My parents read this blog, and that makes them feel very close even when they are miles away.

What are the New Years Resolutions?

Are you ready, here they come...
1. Learn to be a better traveller so that I get the most possible out of future trips and dont waste any time or money learning stuff I could have learnt before I left home.
2. To learn to play drums.
3. To learn to play poker, in all its incarnations.
4. To listen to every song in our song collections (note the plural, we might live together but mixing our cds together is never going to happen).
5. To learn about nutrition and change my diet for the better.

Who was HI and what does it stand for?

In the earlier posts HI refers to Him Indoors, or James as hes known to the world. At the beginning of the blog we lived together in The Dollshouse but due to my inability to have a job within 200 miles of said tiny house we have no parted ways.

Who was The Landlord?

The Landlord is Jamie, he refers to me as The Lodger. We lived together in 2008 and spent inhuman amounts of time watching crap telly. Hes a cool Landlord cause he let me cycle and play the drums in the house. Unfortunately he was the landlord of a house, not a pub, so there is room for improvement in on the landlord-cool-ometre.

Who hosts the blog?

In order to find a good mix of features and designs Ive tried a few blog hosting sites and checked out a lot of other peoples blogs. After much tooing and frowing! Ive come back to blogger because it lets me do real time posting and because its a dedicated blog site so it works just as you'd hope a blog site would. Im sorry the design is still so boring, ive been experimenting with many designs but I havent made any decisions on that cause I keep running out of time.

Who owns www.armchairbackpacker.co.uk

I do! Just to make the blog easy to find I bought the URL from http://www.1and1.co.uk/. I dont own the .com version (or any of the others) and so content under these URLs is not related to me and now owned by me.

How can you contact me?

Please leave me a comment on the blog posts. I look forward to hearing about your armchair adventures.

Who can leave me comments?

Anyone! I like comments, its nice to know someone is reading. Ive got the word recognition verification on so hopefully wont get too much spam. I dont read the comments before they appear (cause there is nothing more frustrating for nice commenters to find they cant see what they have written) but I will delete anything inappropriate as soon as its brought to my attention.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://armchairbackpacker-about.blogspot.com/2009/02/why-what-and-who.html' title='What?
